Through targeted outreach using radio programs, posters, and flyers, these trained workers reached hundreds of residents, helping families make informed health decisions, protect themselves, and build resilience against the pandemic. With continued support, we can expand this approach to reach even more vulnerable communities, ensuring accurate health information drives lasting change.

Building Health Through Community Health Workers and Communities: Challenges and Solutions (2019)

In 2019, HURIC Uganda implemented a project, “Building Health Through Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Community Participation,” which aimed to strengthen frontline healthcare and address systemic health inequities. The initiative empowered over 150 CHWs through training, continuous professional development, and advocacy for legal recognition and fair remuneration, while delivering essential services such as dental care, eye care, legal aid, and health education to 12 underserved communities. It also identified key structural barriers, including a lack of access to water, electricity, and specialist care, and utilised evidence-based advocacy to push for policy reforms. By fostering community ownership and integrating rights-based approaches, the project enhanced service delivery, improved access to health services, and laid the groundwork for sustainable, community-driven health systems.

Health Rights (HR)Recognising health as a fundamental human right, this program works to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare and address broader determinants of health.
